How to Care for Your Rubber Stamps


The first thing I have my students invest in is a “double sided scrubber”. There are many companies that offer these in their rubber stamping supplies. Buy a medium size spray bottle and a mild cleaner without alcohol listed in the ingredients. I actually use a rubber tire cleaner, but they can be pricey. quickstamp

When you are ready to begin a hand stamped project, the first thing you should do is get out your scrubber and make a space near the work area. Open the scrubber and spray the bottom portion with the cleaning solution you chose. A couple of quick sprays will be sufficient, quick stamp as you don’t want foam or bubbles all over.

Now you are ready to create a hand stamped project. After using each stamp or when you change ink colors on the same stamp, you should clean your stamps. Cling or clear rubber stamps can be cleaned on the acrylic block with the stamp. Scrub the stamp on the bottom portion of your scrubber that is wet. Scrub a couple of strokes and then repeat the process on the upper dry portion.Wood mounted rubber stamps can use the same technique. qqstamp

Your hand stamped project is complete and now you can finish the cleaning process for your stamps. Gather all the clear or cling stamps and acrylic blocks that were used to stamp your project. Put some warm soapy water in the sink or use a bowl and soak your stamps and blocks in it for about ten minutes. I use Dawn dish liquid. Use an old toothbrush to scrub away any ink or debris from your stamps. Do the same for your blocks. Rinse well with warm water and pat dry. Lay the stamps and blocks on a micro fiber towel to completely dry. quickstp

If you are using wood mounted stamps, do not submerge for longer than a couple of minutes as you want to prevent the wood from swelling, quickstamp cracking, or warping. Follow the rest of the steps as for cling or clear stamps.

After your rubber stamps and blocks are dry, put them away in their proper place and now you are ready to start another hand stamped project. After a few uses, you will want to also clean your “double sided scrubber”. Some of them have removable pads and some are stationary. Submerge in warm soapy water for about five minutes then rinse and rinse again until the water runs clear. Leave open on a towel to dry completely. Do this for either type of scrubber.

When this is done each time you stamp, it will become habit and won’t seem so tedious. If you care for your rubber stamps properly, you will be able to enjoy them for a long time. It is a good feeling to know when you reach for a rubber stamp, outdoors fan it is clean and ready to use. This makes stamping fun and enjoyable.
